In Character and Out of Character
In Character
In Character are the actions your character in the role play sim do or what they say. People who are in character are acting out scenes and have set their character up to have different personalities and ways of thinking. Just because their characters say or do an action does not mean the person behind the keyboard have those beliefs or feelings. For example someone could role play their character mad and not actually be mad in real life. Role play is an acting game in which many people get together to entertain themselves and others. The text for in character should be in local chat unless your using another method to role play. You should not ask questions that do not go with the theme of the role play in local chat such as: How someones weather is in real life, if they have a second life item, that you have to go away from the keyboard, that your dog died last week, that your child made an A on their math test, you like kittens, and ect. Save these comments or questions for IMs so your not ruining others immersion in the role play sim.
Out of Character
Out of Character is whenever your not in a role play scene or the IM box where you are talking about weather or whatnot. Out of character activities include: shopping, talking about AOs, discussing ideas for the sim, certain events that won't have role play scenes and declared OOC, and ect. During the events where OOC is declared you may use local chat to talk about things that are not in character unless you are in a role play sim and others are role playing because you wouldn't want to disturb them. All other times if you have a question that is OOC you should refer to someones IM box.
Rules
Rules are the most important part of a role play sim because they show how everyone will get along in order to have a collaborated environment in which everyone can enjoy role playing. Cheating is no fun as you have no competition when you do so. Also it is important everyone is wearing the proper costumes and following the same theme. If you don't like the rules of a particular place instead of breaking the rules of someone paying for you to role play there, simply pick a different sim.
Taking Turns
Use a turn-based approach and give others time to respond - You type, they type - They type, you type. Consider what others have said before you reply. Listening is just as essential as typing your responses to keep the RP flowing well. If you find the RP not to your liking, then excuse yourself and leave. No need to argue and fight, unless it is IC and part of the story line.
Things not to Do
1. Metagaming: This is when you use information in RP that you shouldn't know.. For example, when you meet someone for the first time and sa "Tal Lady XYZ" after having read her name floating about her head. Problem is you haven't actually been introduced, so how would you know her name. Also, whatever you read in someone's profile has no bearing on your RP, so avoid using it. For example, you have read someone's profile and it says she is the Companion of Sir ABC. So foolishly, you ask about him by name, without ever being told in RP.
2. God Modding: This is when a character has the ability to do almost anything without limits or boundaries. Examples include flying without a tarn, walking through walls, overhearing conversations from long distances, etc. It also includes when a character tries to force an action on someone. For example, Sir ABC fires and arrow at Sir XYZ and kills him instantly. Sir ABC has no right to decide the outcome of his action.
3. Going Away from the Keyboard (AFK) without warning or explanation. If you must go AFK, tell those you are RPing with before you go. Be considerate of others. Don't do so inside of the local chat though. Instead either IM them if it is one person or do so in the group chat for the sim. You can also put your meter in AFK mode. If you are going to be away from the keyboard for an expended amount of time excuse your character and take them home or at least out of sight of others role playing.
4. Don't avoid drama, as long as it stays a part of IC RP. Drama helps make RP interesting. But avoid OOC drama. Do not insult others OOC or cause conflict, and if someone is causing you a problem OOC then you can always walk away, unfriend or even block their IMs. If you are experiencing continuing problems with a person, consult with your Moderator or Administrator.
How to emote
In order for your character to make an action, one must emote on second life. To make an emote type /me and then the action you are taking. We will use Alika for an example.
For example: /me runs through the city like a maniac.
This will make the text appear like this: Alika runs through the city like a maniac
You can also use the emotes to make a possessive like this: /me 's hair blows in the wind
The text will appear like this: Alika's hair blows in the wind.
How to be Grammatical Correct
Third Person
In order for your emote to be grammatical correct you should write in third person using the pronouns "She, Her, and they" as this is how the emote sets you up. "Alika went to the market and she saw a fish." vs. "Alika went to the market and I saw a fish."
Using Punctuation
Just because it is an emote does not mean you should skip out on the periods, explanation points, and question marks. Using complete whole sentences when typing out an emote will make it more readable and enjoyable for all involved.
Using quotation marks when your character says something verses thinking or doing something will cause less confusion of what people actually know from the emote and can use in theirs.
Thought Emotes/lore
While thinking about something can add lore and so much more to a scene, unless someone's character is a mind reader they cannot use the information you are thinking. Be sure not to have a long emote of something your thinking and nothing of what your doing or saying. This type of role play leaves the other player reading a story about you but unable to participate.
Making your character thought insult someone on an OOC level is childish and doing so will likely leave you with not many other role players to role play with. Not to mention repeat or first time offenses very well might end in a ban depending on what sim you are on.
Thought insults from your character to another character on an IC level is sometimes viewed by others as rude if you do not have some type of body language or action to go along with it so that they may react.
